Cover Me fue uno de los siete singles de éxito del álbum Born in the USA. Inicialmente Bruce escribió la canción para Donna Summer, aunque la participación de Bill Scheniman, un ingeniero de sonido que trabajó en las sesiones para el disco Dedication de Gary US Bonds, hace pensar que se barajó incluir el tema en dicho disco, una decisión bastante acertada conociendo el sabor a rhytm and blues y soul que tenía inicialmente la canción.
Bruce no contaba con Cover Me para su disco ya que la encontraba floja y demasiado pop con los arreglos que había hecho para Donna Summer, pero John Landau defensor de la canción desde un principio acabó por convencerle. A cambio Springsteen terminó por cederle a la diva Protection.
Paralelamente a la versión publicada en Born in the USA, se produjeron cuatro remixes, a cargo de Arthur Baker y Toby Scott, que se editaron en formato maxisingle.
